 Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is your definition of Master-Built?
One person, making one guitar from begining to end. Vision, craftsmanship, advanced technology and process using the finest materials. A Guilford guitar is Master-Built. As a result, each one speaks "the musical truth".

  • What is a "Shed Neck"?
Stradivarius used his ingredients, we use ours. It is so requested now that it is becoming the neck we are known for. The process involved is proprietary but we can tell you that it uses ingredients deeply ingrained in the fabric of American culture and yields a remarkable result. It makes a neck look well played in - not a relic job, no, it is different from that but it doesn't look new either. It feels like it's been in your hands for years and resembles a guitar that had been diligently played for a long time. That's a Shed neck and only Guilford Guitars does it like this.

  • What is the Guilford Guitars warranty?
Guilford Guitars are warranted from the date of purchase for 1 year against defects in workmanship and materials. Normal wear and tear to the instrument is not covered. To obtain the warranty service, the guitar must be sent back to us at which time the guitar will be inspected to determine, under our sole discretion the validity of any warranty claim and make the necessary corrections. Any repairs or restorations performed that do not fall under the warranty service will have appropriate repair fees applied which are the responsibility of the owner of the guitar and payable in full before the instrument is repaired and returned. Any damages to the instrument after the instrument leaves the facility are not the responsibility of Guilford Guitars, Inc. which include acts of nature including weather extremes and misuse, shipping damage, abuse or neglegence by the guitars owner.

  • What is a "Digi-tuck Body bevel"?
Funny you should ask. That is a feature that comes with an Atlas carved top model. When holding a Guilford Guitar, bring your fret hand towards the body way up into the upper register. The immediate place where your "digits" touch the body is where we gracefully bevel back some material to allow for a little more comfort. The effect is subtle on purpose. By design, I didn't want it to stand out all that much. Too often we see guitars on the market that have bevels of all sorts on the front or on the back. You will see tips, tucks, rounds, shaves and every whacky and purposeless removal of wood in an effort to be different. What good is being different if you don't have a purpose? To the player, it is a significantly nice thing to have.

  • Will you do custom work?
Absolutely - I specialize in making your dream instrument come to life! Guilford Guitars makes amazing custom built electric guitars. For as long as guitars have existed, players have altered them to their preferences. Sometimes, a player wants to buy a brand name guitar if it only had a detail or two changed but can't get the manufacturer to do it for a reasonable price. If that sounds familiar, you've come to the right place! Please email me if you have an idea for a guitar, and would like to get a price quote and/or to dicuss the details.

  • Will you alter a guitar shown for sale on this site to my specs?
Almost anything can be done to make a guitar the way you want it but it might entail that we start from scratch with a fresh quote. If you see a guitar on this site and would like one just like it but with some changes, please email with the request.

  • How long will it take to get my guitar?
At the time you receive your price quote, it will also include an estimate for the time it will take to complete the job. Sometimes, events happen beyond my control, i.e. backorders, etc. I am finding that endorsement opportunities are coming up which can take priority often. There are always jobs that are on going but Guilford Guitars does not like to have a long waiting list as many custom builders do. For example, some luthiers have waiting lists that stretch into years. Guilford Guitars can usually complete your guitar within 6 to 8 months from the time you place your order and depending on the specifications you are looking for, sometimes even sooner.

  • Once I decide on the specs for my guitar can I change my mind?
As the owner of Guilford Guitars, I always try to do what people want because it helps to build my reputation as a luthier who gets things done right. Also, I understand that it can be difficult to decide between options that are so desireable. Once the job starts, there are parts, wood and other shop resources that must be allocated for the job and if a detail can be changed without disrupting the flow, then I am happy to make the change for you. If you wish to make a change, the sooner the better. In some cases, your elected changes will require an additional invoice. Keep in mind, YOU CAN ALWAYS GET ANOTHER GUITAR IF YOU WISH - EITHER NOW OR LATER.
